NERVOUS PATIENTS

DO YOU FEAR GOING TO THE DENTIST? WE DO OUR BEST TO HELP NERVOUS PATIENTS

“I have odontophobia”, our patients often tell us. But in reality, most people saying this don’t have real odontophobia. They have a fear of going to the dentist. However, the good news is that we can treat all nervous patients here at Valby Tand. And in the event of you having serious odontophobia, we can help you find specialist treatment.

THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN FEAR OF THE DENTIST AND ODONTOPHOBIA

Fully fledged odontophobia is a phobia. It is also known as an anxiety. A phobia can be described as the person experiencing anxiety is unable to explain why he or she is reacting strongly, or why the patient is afraid of something to the point of it being irrational. In other words, a phobia is typically consistent, inexplicable or inexplicably strong. In most cases, there is no rational explanation as to why someone is afraid of little, harmless spiders (aracnophobia) or why someone could feel uncomfortable in elevators (claustrophobia), even though one has never had any traumatic incidents in an elevator. Those suffering from real dental anxiety (odontophobia) are rarely capable of mentioning a defining moment that triggered their anxiety. More often than not, the physical symptoms of odontophobia are heart palpitations and outbreaks of sweating, already as the patient is contemplating calling to book an appointment with their dentist. This often means that many anxiety sufferers put off their routine check-up altogether.

At Valby Tand, our skilled dental staff are always very sympathetic of nerves and apprehension about going to the dentist. ????

ODONTOPHOBIA REQUIRES SPECIALIST TREATMENT

We make a conscious effort to listen to you and help you get a referral to a specialist. We sincerely believe that everyone should be able to overcome their nervousness or dental anxiety, so that they are able to seek out the oral hygiene treatment they deserve in the future. Dental anxiety often stems from previous traumatic experiences at the dentist’s office. Most common cause of trauma is that the staff did not explain what was going to happen. The treatment might have been unexpectedly painful, or the staff have been belittling the fear you have tried to bring to their attention. You will never get that kind of treatment from us.

We are accommodating of nervous patients

Being nervous about going to the dentist is usually manageable with good and extensive information, before, during and after the procedures. If you can relate to anything of the above, whether it is being a nervous patient or struggling with odontophobia, give us a call or fill out the form “Do you have any special needs or expectations to us?” under the tab “New Patient”, and request a phone call from us. We are always here to listen and we wish to support you in overcoming your anxieties and apprehensions. Everyone deserves healthy, strong and beautiful teeth.
