What is periodontal disease?
Periodontal disease is a gum disease that starts as gingivitis and can progress to a more serious condition where the gums recede and teeth lose their attachment. The disease occurs when plaque and bacteria are allowed to build up along the gum line and invade the gum pockets.
If periodontal disease is not treated in time, it can cause permanent damage to teeth and bone tissue.
Symptoms of periodontal disease
It is important to be aware of the early signs of periodontal disease as early treatment can prevent the disease from worsening. Some of the most common symptoms include:
- Bleeding from the gums when you brush your teeth
- Red, swollen or sore gums
- Bad breath or bad taste in the mouth
- Receding gums that make your teeth look longer
- Loose teeth or changes in your bite
If you experience any of these symptoms, it’s important to seek dental care quickly.
How does periodontal treatment at ValbyTand work?
Examination: We start with a thorough examination of your teeth and gums to assess the extent of the disease. We measure the gum pockets and may take X-rays to see if the bone tissue is affected.
Gum pocket cleaning: We perform a deep cleaning of the gum pockets to remove plaque and bacteria that cause the inflammation. This is also known as scaling and root planing.
Follow-up treatments: In severe cases, more treatments may be needed and we follow up regularly to ensure the inflammation subsides and the gums heal.
Oral hygiene counseling: We will guide you on how to best care for your gums at home with proper brushing, flossing and possible mouthwashes.
