Denture / Prosthesis

What is a Denture / Prosthesis?

A denture, also referred to as a dental prosthesis, is an artificial appliance used to replace missing teeth and the surrounding tissues. These devices are essential for restoring the normal function and appearance of the mouth when natural teeth have been lost due to age, injury, tooth decay, or gum disease. By replacing missing teeth, dentures help patients chew food properly, speak more clearly, and maintain the natural shape of the face by providing structural support.

Dentures are custom-made to suit each individual’s mouth, ensuring both comfort and functionality. There are various types depending on how many teeth are missing and what the patient’s oral health condition is—some are removable while others are attached to dental implants for greater stability.

Different Types of Dentures

There is no one-size-fits-all solution when it comes to dentures. Several types of dental prostheses are available, each designed to accommodate specific needs and preferences. Choosing the right one depends on the extent of tooth loss, the health of the remaining teeth and gums, as well as the patient’s lifestyle.

Full Dentures (Complete Dentures)

Full dentures are recommended when all teeth are missing in either the upper or lower jaw, or both. They consist of a base made from acrylic that mimics the natural gum tissue, supporting a complete set of artificial teeth. These dentures rest directly on the gums and are usually held in place by suction or dental adhesives. For added stability, full dentures can also be supported by dental implants.

Partial Dentures

Partial dentures are used when patients have lost several teeth but still retain some of their natural teeth. These dentures consist of a set of replacement teeth attached to a metal or acrylic framework that clips onto the remaining natural teeth. Partial dentures not only fill in gaps but also support the remaining teeth and help prevent them from shifting position over time.

Implant-Supported Dentures

Implant-supported dentures offer a more permanent and stable solution. These are anchored directly to titanium implants that are surgically inserted into the jawbone. This type of denture provides enhanced stability, better chewing efficiency, and greater comfort, especially for those who have experienced problems with traditional lower dentures. They are often recommended for patients with sufficient jawbone density.

How Dentures Are Made

The process of creating a denture involves several appointments designed to ensure that the final product fits perfectly and looks natural. Each step is customised according to the patient’s individual needs:

  1. Initial Consultation
A thorough dental examination is conducted to assess the condition of the oral tissues and remaining teeth. The dentist will discuss whether a full, partial, or implant-supported denture is the appropriate solution.
  2. Impressions and Measurements
Precise impressions (molds) of the gums and any remaining teeth are taken. Measurements of the bite and alignment are also recorded to ensure proper fit and comfort.
  3. Trial Denture (Wax Model)
A trial version of the denture made from wax is created and fitted. This allows both the dentist and patient to examine the shape, colour, and fit before the final denture is crafted. Adjustments can be made at this stage to improve comfort and aesthetics.
  4. Fabrication of Final Denture
Once approved, the final denture is made from durable materials like acrylic or porcelain. It is then polished and prepared for final fitting.
  5. Denture Fitting and Follow-Up
After receiving the denture, the patient will attend follow-up appointments to make sure everything fits well and functions effectively. Minor adjustments are often needed initially.

Adjusting to Dentures

Adapting to new dentures takes time. Common initial issues include increased saliva production, minor irritation, and temporary difficulty in speaking or chewing. These symptoms usually subside within a few days or weeks as the mouth becomes accustomed to the new appliance.

It is essential to maintain good oral hygiene and denture care. Dentures should be removed and cleaned daily using appropriate cleaning products and tools such as a special denture brush. When not in use, they should be soaked in a denture-cleaning solution or plain water to prevent them from drying out and losing their shape.

Long-Term Care and Replacement

Although dentures are built to be durable, they do not last forever. On average, dentures need to be replaced every 5 to 10 years due to natural changes in the mouth and wear over time. Jawbone and gum tissue can shrink or shift, affecting the fit of the denture. Regular dental check-ups are essential to monitor these changes, make necessary adjustments, and maintain oral health.

Most denture-related issues, such as discomfort, looseness, or changes in bite, can be resolved through relining, rebasing, or complete replacement of the prosthesis.

Who Can Benefit from Dentures?

Dentures are suitable for individuals who have suffered partial or complete tooth loss. Tooth loss can occur for several reasons, including:

  • Advanced gum disease (periodontitis)
  • Severe tooth decay
  • Facial or oral trauma
  • Natural aging of the teeth and gum structures

Restoring missing teeth with dentures enhances not only oral function—such as the ability to eat and speak—but also helps maintain facial aesthetics and boost self-esteem. A full smile can make a significant difference in quality of life.
