Tooth wear happens to everyone at a slow and steady pace
That’s why it’s natural to see more tooth wear in older people than in younger people. The natural tooth wear on the chewing surfaces – where the teeth come into contact when chewing together – is 0.1 mm in 10 years. This means that a front tooth will be 1 mm shorter to look at after 100 years. Tooth wear first occurs in the outermost layer of the tooth, the enamel, which is the hardest tissue. When wear occurs through the enamel, it reaches the inner tissue, the dentin, which is softer and therefore wears at a much higher rate. The literature states that the wear is 8-10 times faster on the dentin than the enamel. It can typically be seen as small cup-shaped indentations on the top of the teeth. They may look like cavities, but they typically have nothing to do with bacteria.
The problem with tooth wear is that the exposed dentin can cause tooth sensitivity, change the bite, in some cases cause cavities and it can become a cosmetic problem with flat and short front teeth.
The challenge is: how do you know if the wear is at a normal or abnormal pace?
In the past, or until recently, measuring tooth wear was incredibly complicated and really only for researchers. You had to take many traditional silicone impressions that were uncomfortable for patients, cast plaster moulds, and then have a large and sensitive measuring device to compare tooth wear over time.
With our advanced 3D scanner, we can take a digital impression of your teeth on a given date and then take a new impression at a later date to accurately measure whether your tooth wear is normal or excessive. That’s exactly what it’s all about. And it’s also a paradigm shift for digital impressions, which are now not only used to produce things for teeth, but have become a great tool for dentists to make the right diagnosis: normal or abnormal wear. And perhaps most importantly: Is it necessary or unnecessary to treat.

Treatment of tooth wear
The treatment for tooth wear depends on how severe the wear has become. As with most diseases, prevention is the best treatment. If the wear is caused by acid from the stomach, i.e. acid reflux, medical treatment is required. If you grind your teeth, a good way to protect your teeth from abrasion is to wear a plastic mouthguard while sleeping, which can also be used during the day whenever possible. If your tooth wear is caused by improper bite and teeth alignment, teeth straightening may be necessary. If treatment is necessary or you want to cosmetically restore beautiful front teeth, it should be as gentle as possible. This is called minimally invasive. In these situations, a treatment with plastic that is bonded on top or on the outside of the teeth is often suggested. If it’s more serious, it may be necessary to place a layer of porcelain on the teeth.
